Why Afterguard? Why Membership?
At Afterguard Sailing Academy, we've been inspiring sailors of all ages in Oakland since 2003! Whether you're a nervous about sailing but want to try it, somewhere in the process of learning wanting a fresh perspective, looking to simply sharpen your skills our American Sailing Association (ASA) certified courses are designed to help you achieve confidence on the water.
Imagine learning to sail on boats ranging from 8' to 45', and even joining flotillas on 38-50' vessels around the globe! ⛵️
The benefits of sailing extend far beyond learning to harness the wind and guide a boat through waves—it's a fantastic way to build teamwork, leadership, and spatial/situational awareness while having fun! Wonderful life balancing activity.
Membership gives you easier access to sailing, lessons and boat use. Our affordable lessons become 20% more affordable. Boats rental costs cost 40% less. Practice sails are encouraged and to encourage new and those who have taken lessons we coordinate group practices weekly. Members can use "dues" once a month to pay for at least one of these fun practice sails.
Through the practice sails members get the opportunity to meet and get know other sailors expanding their network of sailing friends. When wanting to rent a boat, must have a 'first mate' to safely sail. Practice sails is a great way to meet more.
Membership Tiers
A one-time $575 initiation fee is required to join as a member. This fee is waived when enrolling in three or more courses at the time of joining.
Boat Sponsorship
Chief, Skipper, and Captain levels are eligible for Afterguard's boat sponsorship program. The Boat Sponsorship Program is perfect for members who want more time on the water and a closer relationship with a specific vessel. Sponsors choose a favorite boat to focus on and receive the benefits associated with that boat’s membership tier (Chief, Skipper, or Captain). In exchange, Sponsors trade time helping care for their chosen boat, assisting with upkeep, readiness, and light maintenance, in return for additional sail time beyond the pre-paid charter days per month. Sponsors have a more flexible charter arrangement that gives committed sailors deeper access and more learning experiences, while supporting the fleet. Ideal for members who want to sail often, want to mentor others, or are considering boat ownership in the future.
