British Virgin Islands Jan10-17/2026
For Kevin and I it was an all nighter on Jan 9th to arrive on Jan 10th. We flew into Tortola then took a shuttle to the marinas Road Town and Nanny Cay. We each got aboard 2 beautiful yachts, 'Wish you were here' and 'Belight'.
Trip Report
10th - After a through check out we both sailed to Cooper Island mooring field.
We watched a sunset staring right down the length of the Sir Francis Drake Channel. St. John is in the distance, and your view is rimmed by a continuous line of green gems. The lights of Road Town begin to blink to the north, and the sun dips lower creating a rich, orange light perfect for photos of Cooper.
11th - Virgin Gorda - The Baths, is one of the natural wonders in the Caribbean, known for its massive granite boulders, hidden caves, and crystal-clear tidal pools. All who went to shore enjoyed this destination. We anchored off the swimming line and swam in to shore. After the swim we hiked up hill to get a park access pass to follow the trail back down the hill to the rocks, caves and all the best parts.
Next stop was the marina at Virgin Gorda mid island at Spanish Town. The small town was vibrant with a very helpful staff at the marina, charming cafes, beach side restaurants, and local markets. We were able to add to our provisions including conch at the local markets. Conch fritters and ceviche was on our menu. A peaceful night was enjoyed by all.
12th - Virgin Gorda -North Sound anchorages and a visit to the Saba Rock. We moored at Lererick Bay. We planned to inquire about the water toys but went grocery shopping again instead. Found all the ingredients for sushi and rolls. Rob had been hand-line fishing and caught a Barracuda, so far. Lured by the thought of Saba Rock restaurant, our boat, group of 4, tried to use our dinghy to reach it for dinner. Underway mid-portside of the RIB opened up and water poured in. Not to sink us but not something we were going to deal with underway at night. A quick spin brought us back to the fun Pirate restaurant at Leverick Bay. Our other boats crew had already gone there for dinner. Burr joined them and the 3 remaining had seared Tuna and Coconut Rice aboard.
13th Anegada was cancelled due to the quick reservations by Boaty Ball. Kevin had his finger poised to make a bouy reservation but logged in at 6:59 and was kicked off as being too early. By the time he logged back in at 7:02 all the reservable bouy balls at Anegada were taken! By 7:10 a mass exodus left from our mooring field headed north. All the first come first serve bouys were also going to gone before we could get underway. No Anegada this trip! Plan B.
We saw a deserted resort for sale. It was still early in the morning. We went to shore to explore. Kevin's boat followed. We found a hat on the beach and enjoyed the hike through the brambles. Kevin tried to pick clearer route in but Paula took a fall getting out of the boat. What a trouper. She hobbled about and still joined us for lunch at Saba Rock. With a fresh wind we sailed east toward Cane Garden Bay on Tortola. The younger folk went to town for dinner, music and fun.
14th Cane Garden Bay Cane Garden Bay has a 100 year old a rum distillery. It was a bit of a hike to get to but worth the trip. They are on YouTube. What Cane Garden Bay did not have was a doctor. When we left all agreed next stop had to be the only place with a doctor, Road Town. While the boat "Wish you were here" went to Road Town our boat "Belight" went across the channel to Norman Island and Willie T's. Oh they had fun. Father and Son with Burr documenting it, drank a few and jumped. It's a tradition. See the video.
15th - Both boats went back across the channel to Jost Van Dyke. 'Belight' stopped at Foxy's mooring. It was full so we anchored. I stayed on Anchor Watch while my 3 crew went to shore, took a taxi and had lunch at Soggy Dollar Bar. After they returned, Doug Trip and I went to Foxy's. We shopped unsuccessfully for a shirt to swim/snorkel for me but... instead we met Foxy, himself. What a treat. He is turning 87 this fall.
We left Foxy's to join our other boat at the cove between Large and Little Jost Van Dyke. The Taboo restaurant and bar had Conch Fritters - taste test! Then most of us hiked to the Bubbly Pool. That is so fun. The waves crash through a narrow gap into to small pool. The bubbles from the wave are a like a jaccazi.
That night we had our group pot-luck. Our team used the Tun caught by Rob. Prepared in team fashion Suzi rolls. We brought it all to 'Wish you were here' so Paula could be part of it all with her leg on ice. Doug made his famous pain killers both full strength and Mock-tails. A very fun night for all.
16th - In the morning on our way out we both stopped by the island Sandy Cay. We took our last snorkel and swim in the wonderful Caribbean waters. A walk on the beach. Sigh. Such a beautiful place.
We sailed out the passage around the bottom of Tortola and Back to our Home Ports on Tortola
Next adventure sail is the Seychelles Oct 1-10, 2026. A captain met in the BVIs said the Seychelles is BVIs x 15 for the beauty. He said of all the places he has sailed, the Seychelles is the most amazing. Join us.
